Stephan Wolke was strongly influenced by guitar players like Jorgos Panetsos, Carlo Marchione, Pavel Steidl and by the duos Melis and Assad. As a soloist, he constantly finds new ways of choosing and compiling his concert programmes. His repertoire ranges from the most famous and well-known pieces of guitar-music between the baroque era and 21th century. Also, he has a distinct liking of performing unacquainted pieces from the late 19th and 20th centuries. His recent recording presents compositions from Bach to Rodrigo. Stephan Wolke plays a guitar by the german Guitar Builder Nicolaus Wollf.

Alongside his solo work, he is especially interested in chamber music which he plays mainly with Trio Klang|||Kontakt. Consisting of a soprano and two guitars, Stephan Wolke arranges compositions from oratorio to opera which is something new in classical concert halls.

As a teacher, Stephan Wolke is instructing several classes of guitar-players in Dortmund and Selm. Showing young students the delight of making music and learning to play an instrument is one of the most important tasks as a teacher. Last but not least, he is artistic director of the „Börsteler Gitarrenseminar“ which takes place annually at the Stift Börstel/Osnabrück.

KLANG|||KONTAKT

A trio consisting of two guitar players and a soprano – this is brand new on classical stages. Since 1999 Kirsten and Stephan Wolke had been performing together in various European countries. At the same time Stephan Wolke had been playing with Stephan Beck, forming a guitar duo. Both duos merged into

trio Klang|||Kontakt in 2005.

Their concert programmes are extraordinary and manifold: they are playing music with a wide range from opera to oratorio. For the trio Stephan Wolke arranges the pieces, which were usually composed for orchestra. Thus, now this magnificent œuvre can be performed in intimate trio-playing. The concept of their first programme »Opera Chitarra« is very close to the Italian opera of the 19th century. With arias and interludes by Mozart, Puccini, Rossini and Verdi the trio tells intriguing stories of love, death and conspiracy. Their second programme »Jubilate« is derived from an oratorio of Mozart`s »Exsultate Jubilate«. Music by Bach, Haendel and Rossini is highlighted and makes the listener revel in the beauty of the music. Yet, there is a second focus in their concerts: Kirsten Wolke performs her own choreographies to certain pieces and embodies the music with her movements.

The trio combines music from the well-known classical repertoire with their own rich and groundbreaking perception – this is celebrated by their audience and the press at the same time.

Born in 1976, Stephan Wolke started playing the piano and the violin very early. At the age of 12 he decided to learn electric guitar. He founded the rockband „Stentorian“ with which he played in concerts and recorded various CDs.

In 1994 he opted entirely for the classical guitar and, from 1997, started his studies with Wolfgang Weigel at Münster Conservatory. He received his master’s degree as musician, obtaining at the same time a degree in educational science of teaching guitar.

In 2006 he finished his studies at Hamburg Conservatory with Klaus Hempel and Olaf Van Gonnissen, graduating with distinction.
